South River Vacation

I’m from Southwestern Ontario and one thing I remember growing up was our summer holidays or any holiday for that matter instead of going to the East Coast, the West Coast or Florida, my dad would load us up ( my mom, sister and I) and off we’d go to SOUTH RIVER.

My dad would go hunting for a week every fall at a lodge 15 miles out of South River and that is where he would take us. He loved the north! I was notorious for getting “car sick” and the drive to South River usually took a whole day as we would have to make countless stops along Highway 11 for me to get out of the car and get some air.

When we did arrive at the lodge the owner’s wife always had a big loaf of homemade bread. (which I can still smell to this day). Well, after being car sick all day this did not go over well with me so I would feed mine to the ducks. She never knew. When I look back now, I think these holidays with mom and dad and my sister were the best ever.

It may not have been Florida but I’m sure we saw and did things we could never have done anywhere else. I really wish my dad was here today to know that I was living in NORTH BAY. I’m sure he would have a laugh or two.
